Obama Presidential Center Ready for Public Opening

As final preparations wrap up, both Chicago and national media recently previewed the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park. The center will officially open to the public on June 19, preceded by a dedication ceremony featuring yet-to-be-announced guest performers. The event will be streamed live at the Midway Plaisance and online.

Inside the Museum

The museum, spanning four floors, includes the ‘Sky Room’ with panoramic views. The first floor highlights progressive movements predating Barack Obama, addressing labor, voting rights, and economic policies, while candidly discussing opposition to racial progress and economic disparity. Chicago influences are prominent, with references to figures like Jane Addams and Harold Washington, alongside nods to the early careers of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Obama’s time in the Illinois legislature and his early political endeavors are briefly mentioned. Visitors will find video narrations by Obama, a wall of 2008 campaign buttons, and notable essays from his formative years. A small exhibit addresses racial backlash, including false birther claims and other controversies.

The second floor focuses on Obama’s presidential terms, highlighting the auto bailout, healthcare laws, and military conflicts. Video segments feature interviews with key figures such as Elizabeth Warren and Austan Goolsbee, complemented by personal letters from constituents. Interactive exhibits on democracy and rights are also available for younger audiences.

The third floor offers family-friendly attractions like a replica Oval Office and displays of gifts from foreign leaders. It includes references to significant Chicago events, updated in the miniature style of the Thorne Rooms.

The fourth floor covers rights and reforms related to tribal, disability, LGBTQ, gender equity, and climate change. Visitors can engage with interactive stations to create digital items.
