Nneka Ogwumike Announces Retirement After 15 Seasons in WNBA

Nneka Ogwumike, a forward for the Los Angeles Sparks, has announced her retirement at the end of this season, marking the conclusion of a highly decorated 15-year career in the WNBA. The 36-year-old made this announcement during an interview with Boardroom Talks.

Ogwumike expressed fulfillment with her lengthy career, stating, “I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level.” She noted her initial uncertainty about her potential in the league but acknowledged her longevity and success, which she had not anticipated.

Drafted as the No. 1 pick out of Stanford in 2012, Ogwumike immediately made an impact by earning Rookie of the Year honors. She played a pivotal role in leading the Sparks to a WNBA championship in 2016, the same year she was named league MVP.

Former teammate Alana Beard praised Ogwumike’s leadership and contributions to the game, saying, “Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose, and grace.” Beard commended her impact not only as an elite competitor but also as a leader who shaped the league.

Ogwumike this year made the All-Star Game for the 11th time, averaging nearly 17 points per game.

Despite feeling good physically, Ogwumike expressed a comfort with slowing down, stating, “I just feel like I have poured as much as I could into this game, and the last bit is this year of playing. I’m proud of what I’ve done.”

In addition to her on-court achievements, Ogwumike has been a significant leader off the court. As president of the WNBPA, she played a key role in negotiating a transformative collective bargaining agreement. Terri Carmichael Jackson, executive director of the WNBPA, highlighted her unparalleled commitment, courage, and integrity in leadership.

“Nneka understood that leadership was not simply about having a seat at the table,” Jackson said. “It was about using that seat to move the game and the business of the game forward for every player — today and for generations to come.”
