Tensions Flare in Cowboys and Saints Joint Practice

Summer NFL training camps often bring together intense competition and high emotions. The weather is sweltering, and players are fighting for their positions. It’s no surprise that frustrations can boil over during joint practices between teams. Such was the case for the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints in Oxnard, California.

The practice on August 18, 2026, descended into skirmishes. Punches were thrown, igniting a brawl. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer wryly remarked, “Right now, I’m in charge of fight club.” Punches flew, though most players realized that fists against helmets are ineffective. Some resorted to throwing helmets instead.

Saints tight end Brock Rechsteiner, son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner, used a Suplex wrestling move on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku, who threw a punch, was removed from practice. Caelen Carson also found himself in the fray.

There was dissatisfaction among the coaches. Schottenheimer termed the events “unfortunate” and “disappointing,” as they disrupted the planned productive practice. Saints linebacker Pete Werner acknowledged the protective instinct in players but emphasized the need for control and smart play.

Joint practices have become a preferred training method over preseason games for veterans. They provide an opportunity to compete against starters in a controlled setting. However, incidents like these highlight the challenges of maintaining discipline.

The Cowboys and Saints will not engage in a second joint practice on Wednesday. The Saints are set to face the Rams on Thursday in another training session.
