Nico Hoerner’s Innovative Play Shines Despite Cubs’ Loss to Astros

Chicago Cubs star Nico Hoerner displayed an impressive athletic feat, drawing comparisons to a basketball move, during a game against the Houston Astros. On Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field, Hoerner executed a sensational play during the Cubs’ 3-0 defeat.

In the fifth inning, Cubs’ pitcher Colin Rea faced a strategic bunt from Astros catcher César Salazar. Hoerner, a two-time Gold Glove recipient, was quick to react. Salazar, known for his speed, challenged Hoerner after the bunt. With limited options, Hoerner picked the ball barehanded and made a split-second decision.

The 29-year-old displayed quick thinking by dragging his right leg behind him. This maneuver enabled him to throw the ball between his legs toward first base, despite his momentum moving toward home plate. Cubs’ first baseman Michael Busch completed the highlight play by catching Hoerner’s precise throw to secure the out on the quick Salazar.

Hoerner’s skillful play evoked memories of renowned plays by New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon and Chicago White Sox Mark Buehrle. Colon once flipped a ball behind his back while Buehrle famously pitched a ball through his legs after it deflected off his foot.

Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs continues to be an asset on the field, but the Cubs found few such moments in their loss. Despite Hoerner’s remarkable play, the Cubs (29-23) fell to the Astros (22-31). They will aim for redemption in the series finale on Sunday at 2:20 p.m. ET as they attempt to avoid a series sweep.
