New York Knicks Face Roster Decision as NBA Season Approaches

The New York Knicks are enjoying championship glory for the first time in over 50 years. However, with training camp underway, they need to finalize their roster. The team signed five veterans on camp contracts but has only one or two open roster spots. There’s a shortage of depth in the big-man position behind the starters.

NBA insider Marc Stein highlighted a potential advantage for James Wiseman in this lineup. Wiseman shares a history with coach Mike Brown, which could impact the final roster decision. Stein wrote, “If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will cement a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown.” Brown is now known as the first coach to lead the Knicks to a championship since Red Holzman, but his prior experience with Wiseman at the Warriors could influence his choice.

Stein further noted why Wiseman would be a strategic fit for the Knicks, “Word is that Brown, furthermore, is indeed a Wiseman fan. The newly crowned champs likewise do appear to have a clear need for a third big man behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond.” The combination of Wiseman’s potential and Brown’s support could play a role, although Wiseman’s recent track record—having played only five games in two years—demands he demonstrate his capability during training camp.

Other veterans add pressure to the scene. Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji each bring valuable skills, making every roster cut a challenge this October. Compared to Wiseman’s potential, Drew Eubanks appears to be a safer, albeit less dynamic choice. Yet, Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman adds complexity to the decision.
