New Area Code for New York City

New Area Code for New York City

New York City is adding a new area code: 465. This will be the eighth area code for the city, the first new one since 2017. The change affects the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan.

New York has a rich history with area codes. The 212 area code, introduced in 1947, is considered the original and most prestigious. It’s famously referenced in Azealia Banks’ song, ‘212.’

The city’s population growth continues to demand more phone numbers. Therefore, adding new area codes is necessary.

People often judge each other in New York by trivial things, including area codes. This adds a unique layer to personal identity. A memorable moment in ‘Sex and the City’ highlighted this idea when a character lamented switching from 917 to 347 after losing a phone.

The new 465 starts on Thursday, adding another chapter to the city’s development.
