Senior player Jackson Persin from Naperville Central made a memorable mark during the final baseball match of his high school career at Slammers Stadium in Joliet. Despite the field’s lack of dirt, Persin’s uniform drew attention due to its visible stains. These stains symbolize the hard work and challenges faced by the team throughout their extensive season.
The Redhawks concluded their season with an 11-2 defeat against Mount Carmel in the Class 4A third-place game. Despite the setback, they proudly earned the third state trophy in the program’s history, adding it to their previous victories in 2006 and 2010. “It means a lot,” said Persin, reflecting on the team’s dedication and efforts over the year.
Throughout the season, Persin played in 32 games, primarily as a catcher, designated hitter, and third baseman. Against Mount Carmel, he started at third base and scored both of the Redhawks’ runs. Naperville Central coach Mike Stock commended Persin for his consistent performance, especially when facing strong pitchers. As a top-order batter, Persin collaborated effectively with junior center fielder Jermaine Kenady, contributing significantly to the team’s initial lead.
Although struck out by Mount Carmel’s Ian Tosi, who dominated the game with seven strikeouts over four innings, Persin’s contribution remained notable. Senior Michael Page managed to hit a triple, with Persin following up with a sacrifice fly, securing the team’s second run.
Persin concluded the season with a .263 batting average, accompanied by 11 RBIs in 57 at-bats. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasized the importance of contributing to the team’s success, both on and off the field. “It was about playing to win,” Persin noted, highlighting his intention to support the team in every aspect.
Coach Mike Stock took advantage of the final game to involve 19 players, including six pitchers, offering opportunities to those who had fewer chances to play in previous weeks. “Everybody can play ball,” Stock said, proud of the team’s overall performance, especially their efforts on the mound.
Jermaine Kenady praised Persin for maintaining readiness and confidence, attitudes that positively influenced the team’s dynamics. As one of the junior starters, Kenady remains optimistic about future successes, driven by the team’s collective determination and the strong foundation laid by their senior peers.
Naperville Central’s journey this season was unexpected and rewarding, culminating in a significant 15-game winning streak preceding their state semifinal loss to Maine South. Team spirit and energy were central to their progress, as Persin and his teammates consistently supported one another.
Looking to the future, Kenady remains committed to reaching the state finals again, demonstrating the continued ambition and drive within the team. Encouraged by the memories and achievements of this season, he promised, “We still want to do more.”
