Michael P. Desronvil, the sole juror holding out in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, stood firm in his decision according to his attorney. Desronvil’s lawyer, Edward Paltzik, stated in an interview with Fox News that any claims suggesting Desronvil had reasonable doubt during deliberations are untrue. ‘Michael had zero doubt. No doubt,’ Paltzik explained, citing a substantial amount of evidence to support this stance.
Lindsay Clancy confessed to the killings of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in January 2023. She faced charges of three counts of first-degree murder. Her defense argued she suffered from postpartum psychosis, impacting her criminal responsibility. However, after over five weeks of testimony and seven days of jury deliberations, they couldn’t reach a unanimous decision. This resulted in Judge William Sullivan declaring a mistrial.
The case triggered a national discussion about postpartum psychosis, women’s mental health care, and how the criminal justice system handles defendants with mental illnesses.
Who Is Michael Desronvil?
Michael Desronvil, 48, hails from Massachusetts and was identified as the lone dissenting juror in Clancy’s trial. His role attracted attention following the mistrial as other jurors criticized his deliberation approach publicly. Some jurors expressed concerns that Desronvil didn’t sufficiently consider their arguments. Jury foreperson Roni Carlson revealed to NBC10 Boston that Desronvil once noted reasonable doubt but still refrained from agreeing to Clancy’s non-criminal responsibility.
Another juror, Paula Devlin, described Desronvil’s behavior during deliberations as ‘very arrogant’ and said that other jurors continually reviewed medical and toxicology evidence to address his doubts. Desronvil, in a statement to Newsweek, clarified that he never had doubts and faced interruptions while attempting to discuss different theories.
Following the trial, Desronvil experienced significant public attention. His attorney confirmed his safety at a secure location in a rural area of Northern New England. An online fundraiser collected over $350,000 to support him.
Court records from September 2021 indicated Desronvil faced a criminal charge for allegedly assaulting his then-wife but pleaded not guilty. The charges were dismissed in December 2021.
What Happens Next in Lindsay Clancy Case?
Due to the mistrial, Lindsay Clancy’s case remains unresolved, with charges against her pending. A status hearing is scheduled for September 29 in Plymouth Superior Court under Judge Sullivan. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, requests a finding of not guilty. He also plans to argue against another prosecution on double-jeopardy grounds.
Clancy is held at Tewksbury State Hospital, Massachusetts, where she undergoes psychiatric treatment.
