Missouri Foster Mother Accused of Trading Teenager for Monkey Avoids Prison

A Missouri foster mother named Brenda Deutsch has faced significant legal and public scrutiny for allegedly trading a teenage girl for a monkey. Despite the serious nature of the accusations, she avoided prison time, raising questions about the justice system and foster care procedures.

Brenda Deutsch, age 70, was initially sentenced to seven years in prison for child endangerment. However, a Lincoln County judge suspended the execution of her sentence. As a result, Deutsch was placed on three years probation, allowing her to remain free if she meets the probation’s requirements, according to FOX2 St. Louis.

Judge Thomas Frawley, who revoked Deutsch’s foster care license during the proceedings, expressed frustration with the state of Missouri for permitting her to retain her license. He also addressed the victims in the courtroom, stating remorsefully, “I am sorry the system failed you.”

Brina Johnson, Deutsch’s biological daughter, shared her disappointment over the outcome. She provided testimony regarding the alleged abuse and disclosed having a recorded conversation about the situation, which she handed over to detectives.

“I’m kinda lost for words because this is not the end we wished for,” Johnson told reporters.

The victim at the center of the allegations was reportedly traded for an exotic animal and endured abuse. Johnson claimed Deutsch had at least seven monkeys and indicated poor treatment towards both the monkeys and the foster children.

Allegations emerged that the teenager had been sent to Texas and left in an unsanitary home with numerous exotic animals. Investigations revealed she suffered physical and mental abuse, which included being struck with objects and enduring threats, according to court documents.

Deutsch, who was arrested in April following investigations, acknowledged in court that she sent the child to reside in a home in Texas without knowing any details about it. She faced accusations of physically and mentally abusing the foster child, resulting in the teenager being taken into protective custody in Texas.

The negligence and failure of the foster care system to protect the children in Deutsch’s care has sparked outrage and called for better safeguards and oversight.

Despite the unsatisfactory legal outcome, Brina Johnson found some solace in the judge’s recognition of systemic failures in the foster care process.
