The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, along with forward Bobby Portis, to the Miami Heat. This transaction marks the end of Antetokounmpo’s significant era in Milwaukee, which included delivering the team’s first NBA championship in half a century.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Miami Heat will exchange Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three future first-round picks, the No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft, an additional future pick swap, and a second-round pick for Antetokounmpo and Portis.
Antetokounmpo dominated the league and brought home the franchise’s championship in 2021. The Bucks made this decision amid a decline that saw them miss the 2026 playoffs. This move follows the departure of their championship-winning head coach, Mike Budenholzer, in 2023. Antetokounmpo, aged 31, has consistently been ranked among the top players, earning two MVP awards and an MVP Finals title.
The trade indicates Milwaukee’s aim to rebuild after a challenging post-title period, marred by Antetokounmpo’s injuries and sidelining. Miami’s successful acquisition signifies their readiness to invest resources for immediate success.
The trade positions Miami to pursue another NBA title, with Heat president Pat Riley adding a cornerstone he has sought for years.
