Mayor Johnson Criticized After Teen Chaos in Chicago

Over Memorial Day weekend, Chicago experienced significant unrest caused by a large group of teenagers. This incident resulted in five police officers being hit by a car. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s response has led to criticism from Alderman Raymond Lopez. Lopez has challenged the mayor’s stance on accountability, emphasizing the need for parental responsibility and urging voters to demand effective solutions to crime in the city.

During the weekend, a gathering of youths took place in a takeover-style manner, ending with one person accused of using a vehicle to strike five officers. Lopez stated to Fox News that Mayor Johnson lacks understanding of consequences. He criticized Johnson for not holding the teenagers, young adults, or their parents accountable for actions, even when it involved harming officers.

The incident occurred on the Near West Side, with a car driving west on an eastbound lane hitting officers. According to local reports, the officers, taken to hospitals, are expected to recover. An 18-year-old suspect has been detained with pending charges.

Mayor Johnson addressed the incident on X, urging parents to know their children’s whereabouts. He also mentioned the need for accountability for those involved in violent acts. However, local lawmakers’ push to charge parents criminally has not garnered Johnson’s endorsement.

Lopez, a frequent critic of Johnson, accused the mayor of promoting leniency that encourages disruptive behavior. He referenced Johnson’s remarks about law enforcement not being a sole means to solve neighborhood crimes, suggesting this emboldens misbehavior.

Lopez proposed that parents face citations for their children’s misconduct, pushing for family counseling to improve parenting practices. He contested the notion that such behavior is part of the city’s culture, calling for better community values. Lopez rebuked current leadership for talking tough without effective action.

Fox News Digital attempted to contact Johnson’s office for a statement but received no immediate response. Taylor Penley serves as an associate editor with Fox News.
