Matthew Stafford has solidified his legacy in recent seasons by earning the NFL MVP award for the 2025 campaign. During a game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos on “Sunday Night Football,” Stafford achieved a historic milestone. He became the first player to throw for 20,000 yards with multiple teams.
According to ESPN Insights, Stafford has accumulated 45,109 yards with the Detroit Lions and 20,000 with the Los Angeles Rams. This makes him the sole player in NFL history to reach such a feat.
However, Stafford’s record-breaking night wasn’t entirely positive. He threw his 33rd career pick-six in that game, surpassing Brett Favre’s previous record of 32, making him the quarterback with the most pick-sixes in league history.
At 38, Stafford is aware of his limitations. Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed confidence in Stafford’s improvement with age. Stafford mentioned the importance of having talented receivers and a supportive team, emphasizing how his style of play differs from quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
“But I felt like for me to play really well, everybody around me has to play really well,” Stafford said. “I’m not Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, some of these guys that can go out there and make these unbelievable creative plays with their legs. So I’m really blessed to have good players and a head coach that puts us all in a really good position to succeed. I was playing with a ton of confidence and trust in the players around me and in myself, and that can be a dangerous thing when a quarterback is playing that way.”
Stafford is aiming for a second Super Bowl victory with the Rams this season. While surpassing his Lions yard total might be unlikely before retirement, there remains potential for further accolades.
