South of downtown Los Angeles, an impressive new building draws attention with its unique design. The 300,000-square-foot structure is the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, showcasing over 1,300 pieces of art.

Filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson founded the museum. Designed by architect Ma Yansong, the museum is the first dedicated to visual storytelling across human history.

Lucas explained, “This is a narrative art museum; it’s about telling stories. Although we can’t exclude ‘Star Wars’ entirely, it comprises just seven percent of the art here.” Hobson added, “It’s beautiful and impactful.” The remaining exhibits focus on themes like motherhood, work, family, and love.

Lucas noted, “Love is complex. It’s not easy.” Hobson reflected, “Love often appears as joy in art, but it’s equally heartbreak and pain.”

The museum’s creation spanned nearly two decades, enduring many setbacks. Lucas, unwavering in his vision, invested $1 billion personally. Hobson recalled a decisive moment for the project, leading to its continuation.

The museum also honors illustrators, showcasing works by prominent and lesser-known artists. Board member Steven Spielberg highlighted the museum’s role: providing exposure for various art forms often overlooked by traditional institutions.

Displays include ‘Star Wars’ concept art by Ralph McQuarrie, Norman Rockwell illustrations, comic strips by V. T. Hamlin, and Banksy’s graffiti.

Throughout the museum, visitors encounter varied artworks, including Jackson Pollock and Frida Kahlo pieces, as well as early acquisitions like Lucas’s ‘Ally Oop’ comic strip.

Lucas’s impact extends beyond ‘Star Wars,’ with innovations in digital editing and special effects.

When asked about the museum as his legacy, Lucas responded, “I don’t focus on legacy or reputation.” Hobson noted they named the museum after Lucas to draw visitors.

The museum opens to the public on Tuesday. Hobson hopes visitors leave inspired: “Anything is possible. We can all create masterpieces.”

Lucas sees the museum as challenging norms, encouraging creativity. “Contrarians think outside the box, doing the impossible,” he said.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens September 22.
