Roland Garros Clay Courts
The iconic red clay courts of Roland Garros add a unique feature to the French Open. For over 50 years, the clay has been sourced from a factory in Oise, north of Paris. The production involves crushing bricks with imperfections, resulting in a fine sand that creates an optimal surface for players. Approximately 2,000 tonnes of bricks are processed each year, with 80 tonnes typically used for the courts during the tournament.
Venue: Stade Roland Garros
Stade Roland Garros in Paris’s 16th arrondissement hosts the French Open. Named after aviator Roland Garros, this venue houses 20 courts, with Court Philippe Chatrier being the largest at a capacity of 15,000. Completed in 1928, it commemorates France’s tennis ‘Four Musketeers’—Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and Rene Lacoste—with its stands named after each of them.
