LeBron James to Exit Lakers Before 2026-2027 NBA Season

LeBron James, regarded as one of NBA’s greatest players, will leave the Los Angeles Lakers before the 2026-2027 season, confirmed by the team. Over his eight seasons with the Lakers, he led the team to its 17th NBA championship during the 2019-2020 pandemic-altered season.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss expressed gratitude for his contribution. ‘LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We are thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to under tough circumstances and the numerous records he broke,’ Buss stated. ‘We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He remains a cherished part of the Lakers family.’

It’s not yet clear where James will play next season. The NBA’s free agency negotiation window opens at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

James achieved the title of NBA’s all-time leader in points scored, games played, and seasons spent in the purple and gold uniform. His record includes 22 NBA All-Star selections. However, he has not yet released a public comment.

James gained attention on a Sports Illustrated cover as “The Chosen One” during his high school basketball years in Akron, Ohio. Drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, he took the team to the 2007 NBA Finals, though frustrations over team success prompted his move to the Miami Heat in 2011.

Teaming with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, “The Heatles” secured two titles in four years, marking one of the NBA’s first “super teams” via free agency.

James returned to Cleveland for the 2014-2015 season alongside Kyrie Irving. Over four seasons, they reached the NBA Finals annually against the Golden State Warriors, led by Stephen Curry. The Cavaliers clinched the 2015-2016 championship, overcoming a 3-1 deficit, a first in finals history.

James joined the Lakers before the 2018-2019 season. With his departure, the Lakers look towards Luka Doncic, acquired in a trade last year from the Dallas Mavericks. Doncic signed a three-year contract extension in 2025 and is seen as the new franchise face.
