The release of the LeBron James Philadelphia 76ers jersey has quickly become a sensation. Fanatics reported it as the “best-selling jersey ever for any player in the first 48 hours,” as noted by Adam Wells of Bleacher Report. The jersey surpassed sales records previously held by Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. This achievement reflects the strong demand and excitement surrounding LeBron’s move to the 76ers.
One Philadelphia fan, Joey Abel, took an extraordinary step to celebrate the signing. Residing in New York and enduring the recent success of the New York Knicks, Abel found a unique way to display his enthusiasm. During a beach trip upon hearing the news, Abel decided to demonstrate his excitement in a manner he believes is fitting for a Philadelphian.
“How can I get a LeBron James jersey as fast as possible?” Abel pondered, leading him to an unconventional idea.
With the aid of his nephews’ blue zinc sunscreen stick, Abel’s sister inscribed “James” and “23” on his back, emulating a jersey. He opted to skip sunscreen on the rest of his back, creating a sunburn that left a jersey-like imprint of LeBron’s name and number. Pictures shared by Abel showcase the semi-permanent imprint formed after exposing his back to the sun for about an hour.
The sunburn gained attention online, with many sharing the peculiar display of fandom. Despite the discomfort and his family’s mixed reactions, Abel remains proud of his choice.
“It does hurt, but I did it,” Abel acknowledged. “I’m going to have to keep it. I don’t really want it to fade as fast. Philly toughness, like LeBron’s going to learn.”
The weather during Abel’s sunburn episode was slightly cloudy and in the high 70s. Experts recommend using sunscreen to protect skin despite such weather conditions.
