Lawsuit Filed Against Aerospace Company After Chemical Emergency

A California chemical emergency involving an aerospace company has led to another lawsuit. Thousands fled their homes over Memorial Day weekend due to the incident.

Company Accused of Negligence

The lawsuit claims that GKN Aerospace, a UK-based company, neglected safety protocols. Allegations include negligence, trespass, and nuisance. The suit states they ignored regulatory warnings despite a history of environmental violations.

A malfunctioning storage tank overheated, containing flammable methyl methacrylate (MMA). This prompted evacuations in several Orange County cities. Fortunately, a crack in the tank reduced pressure, preventing an explosion. Most evacuees returned home safely.

State of Emergency Declared

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County. The hazardous incident took place in Garden Grove.

The plaintiffs allege that airborne contaminants invaded their properties. They seek compensation and punitive damages. Claims include emotional distress, temporary loss of property use, and reduced property values.

Evacuations and Legal Action

Authorities evacuated around 50,000 people from Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, Stanton, and Westminster. The GKN facility has been in Garden Grove since 1966.

The lawsuit argues GKN ignored safety of nearby residents by failing to maintain systems. It highlights GKN’s past air quality compliance issues. In 2025, a substantial penalty was imposed for violations.

Health Risks

The Environmental Protection Agency warns that MMA exposure can cause severe health problems. Effects include respiratory issues, neurological damage, and irritation to skin, eyes, and throat.

At least 44 lawsuits have been filed. The Orange County Register reported the incident’s impact.

Company Response

GKN Aerospace expressed regret over the emergency. Steve Carlin, GKN’s Senior VP, stated their commitment to understanding the issue and supporting affected people.
