WASHINGTON—Kyle Kirkwood claimed victory in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. As one of the American drivers in the race, Kirkwood seized the lead from Álex Palou early on, maintaining his advantage throughout.
Kirkwood demonstrated strong performance, with only Palou presenting any significant challenge. Late race cautions erased some of Kirkwood’s efforts, offering an opportunity for Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard. Lundgaard, without a drive for the next season, gained an edge in the final green flag run due to his red alternate tires, surpassing Kirkwood’s primary tires until they began losing grip.
Kirkwood finished first, followed by Lundgaard in second, while Will Power took third on the podium. This victory was vital for Kirkwood’s championship aspirations, reducing Palou’s lead to 91 points. Palou encountered multiple setbacks, including a drive-thru penalty during his first pit stop and issues with his team concerning his front left tire.
Palou crashed on lap 122, causing a late caution.
Kirkwood’s triumph marked his second win of the season and seventh career victory, with six coming from street circuits. The 27-year-old’s first season win occurred at the Grand Prix of Arlington.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, might not recur as a regular event. U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in an honorary lap, with the president waving the green flag to commence the race and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy concluding it with the checkered flag.
Three races remain in the IndyCar season, keeping the championship in contention. The upcoming weekend features a double-header at the Milwaukee Mile, with the finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 6.
All NTT IndyCar Series races are broadcast on FOX.
