Kawhi Leonard’s Return to the Toronto Raptors

Kawhi Leonard’s Return to the Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors have made headlines with a significant trade, bringing back their franchise icon Kawhi Leonard. The Raptors parted with Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several future draft picks, including unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, as well as second-round picks and a 2027 first-round swap. This hefty price reflects Leonard’s value to the team and city, despite his age of 35.

Reports indicate Leonard was inclined to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, due to contractual issues and the Clippers’ reluctance to commit long-term, the Raptors seized the opportunity. Leonard holds an expiring contract with a $50.3 million pay for the upcoming season. The Raptors have shown commitment by offering him a two-year extension, potentially keeping him in Toronto through the 2028-29 season.

This decision reflects a surprising change of heart for Leonard, who left Toronto seven years ago. His departure left memorable moments in Raptors history, particularly during the 2019 playoffs. Notably, his buzzer-beater in Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers, a shot that bounced four times before securing a historic victory. Leonard averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.7 steals over 24 playoff games, leading the Raptors to their first NBA championship and earning a Finals MVP title. He became the 12th player to win Finals MVP with multiple teams, having first won with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.

Leonard returns to a team with a promising roster, including two-time All-Star Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett, a former No. 3 overall pick who scored an average of 24.1 points per game during the last playoffs. The Raptors’ talent pool also features rookie Collin Murray Boyles, sharpshooter Ja’Kobe Walter, and defensive expert Jamal Shead. Leonard’s arrival has instantly transformed the Raptors into Eastern Conference contenders.

For many fans, the story would be complete with the return of Kyle Lowry. The player voiced his intention to retire as a Raptor, having said he plans to sign a one-day contract for his retirement. Yet, with his contract with the 76ers ending, there is speculation about his future. If he decides not to retire, he may sign a veteran minimum contract, which stands at around $3.8 million, to rejoin Leonard and the Raptors. Lowry would contribute his experience and leadership, rather than filling his previous role as the team’s key player.
