Karmelo Anthony was convicted last week for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Newly released evidence offered the public insight into what jurors considered before their decision.
Anthony’s family is seeking an additional $250,000 to support his appeal, following an earlier campaign that raised nearly $634,000. Questions arose regarding the use of those funds. The family announced this new effort at a news conference in Dallas, Texas.
Anthony, aged 19, appealed his conviction for the murder of 17-year-old Metcalf in Frisco, Texas. He claims financial inability to hire an attorney for the appeal.
Additional Legal Support
The new fund aims to cover legal fees, expert costs, and other expenses related to challenging Anthony’s conviction, as stated by attorney Russell Wilson. He explained that the denial of a new trial is part of the appeal process itself. Wilson noted the appeal could take over a year, with the trial record to be compiled in October.
The previous GiveSendGo campaign, launched in April 2025, raised $633,908 but was hidden following Anthony’s conviction. The campaign was organized by Anthony’s mother, initially aiming for $1.4 million, to aid his legal defense and family relocation.
“There’s a misconception that the motion for new trial denial would have ended an appeal,” Wilson said. “It actually is part of an appeal.”
The funds collected earlier reportedly supported legal defense, family relocation, and general living expenses. The campaign concluded once its stated purpose was met.
Current Fundraising Criteria
The new fundraising effort seeks a goal of $250,000. Contributions will be directed to an attorney trust account managed by Wilson. These funds are intended solely for legal expenses.
The campaign listed $30,194 raised as reported by Fox News Digital. Trinicia Ricks created the campaign, and Wilson is designated to receive the funds.
Addressing Fund Usage Concerns
Dominique Alexander, a civil rights activist acting as Anthony’s family spokesperson, addressed concerns about prior fundraising efforts and allegations regarding fund misuse.
“These are deliberate lies,” Alexander stated, emphasizing the funds supported legal processes and family relocation for safety reasons.
Public records indicated Karmelo Anthony’s parents were linked to Louisiana and Texas businesses, yet no wrongdoing was found.
Anthony referred to himself in legal documents as financially unable to hire counsel for his appeal. He remains in custody as the appeal proceeds.
