Joan Cusack and Jessie Take the Lead in ‘Toy Story 5’

Joan Cusack, known for bringing life to the cowgirl doll Jessie in the ‘Toy Story’ series, finally sees the character take center stage in ‘Toy Story 5’. Having voiced Jessie since her introduction in 1999’s ‘Toy Story 2’, Cusack was thrilled for Jessie to have her own story. She remarked, ‘I felt like there was a great story there for girls.’

Cusack’s contributions to Jessie extend beyond voice acting. Early in the character’s development, Jessie was imagined as a talking cactus sidekick with influences over Woody. This changed over the years, turning Jessie into the dynamic and spirited doll loved by many.

Outside of her Pixar engagements, Cusack has maintained a presence in the entertainment industry through movies like ‘Working Girl’ and ‘In & Out’. She also had a brief stint on ‘Saturday Night Live’ from 1985 to 1986. Despite her success in Hollywood, Cusack chose to step away to focus on family. She now runs a gift shop in Chicago, a venture born out of a desire to stay creative while being at home with her children.

Reflecting on her career decisions and contributions to the ‘Toy Story’ franchise, Cusack shared insights into making pivotal suggestions for Jessie’s character development, particularly in ‘Toy Story 3’. Her involvement with the franchise has been a significant part of her career, aligning with her commitments to her family life.

The new movie features Jessie leading the familiar gang against a modern threat. With Buzz Lightyear and Woody by her side, they face off against a smart tablet villain named Lilypad. The film showcases Jessie’s evolution from a potential sidekick to a leading figure, demonstrating her growth over the years.
