Jimmy Kimmel announced that his interview with James Talarico, a Democratic Texas Senate candidate, will not air on television due to threats from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). During his monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel explained that the interview will instead be available on YouTube.
Kimmel stated, “His [President Donald Trump’s] FCC has threatened me, our show, ABC, and our affiliates based on traditional editorial decisions they seemingly dislike.” The decision to forego the broadcast was made to protect station licenses from potential FCC action.
Similarly, Stephen Colbert had previously posted an interview with Talarico on YouTube due to FCC-related concerns raised by CBS. Despite speculation, CBS later denied any prohibition of the interview airing.
In his monologue, Kimmel noted Republican anxiety regarding upcoming midterm elections. He mentioned that polls indicate Talarico is closely contesting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, presenting Democrats with a significant opportunity in Texas.
Kimmel recalled interviewing numerous political figures over the years, including Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz. He mentioned a 2015 interview with Trump, noting Trump’s eagerness for media engagement at that time. Kimmel expressed confusion over the administration’s current stance, stating, “For some reason, something has changed now that he is president.”
Emphasizing the importance of political awareness, Kimmel urged viewers to register to vote, highlighting, “In the America we live in right now, voting is the most important action we can take.”
The situation is developing; further updates are anticipated.
