The success of the New York Knicks in the N.B.A. championship could lead to a surge in babies named after the players, particularly Jalen Brunson. This prediction comes from baby-naming experts who note the existing popularity of ‘Jalen’, and expect even more interest following Brunson’s memorable performance.
Names such as Jalen, Joshua, Miles, and Tyler are already common in the United States, ranking in the top 1,000 for boys according to the Social Security Administration. Additionally, Landry is another name growing in popularity. Pamela Redmond, head of the baby-naming website Nameberry, anticipates these names gaining further traction due to the team’s achievements and the positive community response surrounding their victory.
Redmond suggests that the appeal does not only rest with the team’s success but also with the team’s likable personalities and the unity witnessed in New York. She notes, “I think what’s happened, not just in New York but nationally, is that people are galvanized by the show of community, which feels increasingly important at a time when it’s increasingly rare.”
Jalen Brunson, the team’s captain and MVP of the finals, is projected to influence baby names similarly to how Michael Jordan did. In 2025, nine boys were named Brunson. Since March 1, only five babies in New York City received the name Jalen, though a rise in numbers is predicted. Redmond also expects more girls to receive the name or its variations, while humorously hoping variations like “Brunsina” do not emerge.
