Israeli Strike Kills Lebanese Soldiers Amid Tensions

An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Saturday resulted in the deaths of three Lebanese soldiers, including a brigadier general. This incident increases the strain on a fragile cease-fire mediated by the United States between Israel and Lebanon.

The Lebanese military reported that the strike occurred near the southern city of Nabatieh. The attack targeted a military vehicle and is one of the deadliest since violence ensued in March between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah, a militia backed by Iran, dominates areas of southern Lebanon and operates independently of the Lebanese government. The group did not engage in cease-fire discussions with Israel.

The Lebanese army described the Israeli attacks as “continued, deliberate, and repeated.” Despite being outnumbered by Hezbollah in many regions, the Lebanese army is not involved in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, Lebanese soldiers are sometimes caught in the crossfire since Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in March. This invasion followed Hezbollah’s rocket launches into northern Israel in retaliation to a U.S.-Israeli action against Iran.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, stating the targeted vehicle was moving “suspiciously” towards Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. According to Israel, there were “concrete indications” of a threat from Hezbollah, prompting the attack. The incident is under review by the Israeli military.

While the Lebanese army is not a combatant in this conflict, the ongoing violence primarily involves Israel and Hezbollah. U.N. peacekeepers, alongside Lebanese soldiers, remain stationed in southeast Lebanon.
