Israel Captures Beaufort Castle in Deepest Lebanon Incursion in Decades

Israeli military forces have taken control of a key location in southern Lebanon, centered around a historic fortress. This marks Israel’s most significant territorial incursion into Lebanon for over 25 years. The fortress, known as Beaufort Castle, sits above the city of Nabatiyeh. This development follows a series of airstrikes and intense confrontations with Hezbollah in nearby villages.

The mission began on March 2nd as part of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Tensions escalated when Hezbollah commenced rocket attacks on northern Israel, in response to the U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran, Hezbollah’s main supporter.

Since the start of the conflict, Israel has advanced its ground forces into southern Lebanon, occupying numerous villages and towns near the border. Despite a ceasefire since April 17th, the situation remains volatile. Direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are planned for June 2nd and 3rd.

A Fortress with Historical Significance

The fortress, Beaufort Castle, holds substantial strategic importance. It has served as a military asset for various groups over the centuries. Constructed by the Crusaders in the 12th century, Beaufort Castle has been under the control of Saladin’s army, Mamlukes, Ottomans, the French mandate, the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and the Israeli military.

Israel originally captured Beaufort Castle in 1982, maintaining control until its withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000. The castle, now protected due to its historical value, resides a few kilometers north of the Israeli border and is an important landmark for both Lebanon and Israel.

The Israeli military’s recent operation in the Beaufort Ridge and Suluki valley aimed at dismantling the infrastructure of Hezbollah and ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed the capture by posting a photograph showing Israeli troops at the site.

Expanding Israeli Operations

As operations continue, Israeli forces are penetrating deeper into Lebanon, advancing beyond the Litani River, which once served as a de-facto divide. The area from the Litani up to the Zahrani River has been declared a combat zone. Residents are evacuating due to military actions.

Israeli troops are closing in on Nabatiyeh, just about 5 kilometers from Beaufort Castle. The military has urged residents of nearby areas, including towns like Tyre, to leave.

There has been no immediate reaction from Hezbollah or the Lebanese government regarding the recent developments. However, exchanges of fire persist with claims from Hezbollah about targeting Israeli troops and military vehicles.

Continuing Conflict

Hezbollah launched targeted attacks on Israeli forces, including the use of fiber optic drones. These drones have proved challenging for Israel to counter. Over the past day, residents in northern Israel have faced nearly 200 alerts related to drones and missile threats.

Lebanon’s National News Agency has reported airstrikes causing casualties in southern regions though detailed information is sparse. The renewed hostilities have resulted in significant loss of life, with 3,350 reported fatalities in Lebanon alongside mass displacements. Meanwhile, Israel has encountered losses, including military personnel and civilians.

The situation remains tense as conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues without a clear resolution in sight.
