Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham found herself at the center of a growing controversy on her birthday. Comments she made regarding transgender athletes participating in women’s sports have generated significant backlash online.
Cunningham’s remarks have sparked debate among fans and sports analysts. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve added to the controversy by wearing a ‘Trans Kids belong’ shirt during a game against the Fever, indirectly addressing Cunningham’s comments.
Despite no formal action from the WNBA, Cunningham’s situation led to her being banned from participating in the WNBA subreddit. This platform, independent of the league, now restricts several terms related to the Fever player, including “Cunningham” and “Sophie,” as reported by the New York Post.
On Reddit, user Adventurous_Hope_101 shared a direct message exchange with a subreddit moderator. The moderator explained that Cunningham’s name was filtered to prevent trolling and non-fanatic discussions.
We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W,the message stated. Additionally, the moderator indicated that those wanting to discuss Sophie freely could opt for other subreddit options.
When challenged by the user about the ban on specific player discussions, the moderator threatened potential exclusion from the subreddit.
You aren’t even a contributor to this sub; go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this, you will be banned, was the firm reply.
Amid this controversy, the WNBA intends to address its policies on transgender eligibility. Team presidents convened to discuss these guidelines, especially relevant given two former NBA players’ intentions to join the 2027 WNBA draft.
