Human Remains Found Near Tucson Not Linked to Missing Woman Case

Human remains were recently found about 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home near Tucson, Arizona. This discovery led to online theories about a potential connection to Guthrie’s disappearance over six months ago. However, authorities have stated there is currently no evidence linking the remains to the investigation into her case.

Investigators believe the remains have been in the location longer than Guthrie has been missing. A statement from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department posted on X confirmed that deputies responded to reports of the remains discovered in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. The statement emphasized, “The remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time,” and noted, “At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”

Though the discovery gained attention due to interest in the Guthrie case, finds like these are not unusual in southern Arizona. The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner conducts about 4,500 death investigations annually. The county is known for having the highest number of stored skeletal remains in the nation, as efforts continue to connect these remains with relatives or next of kin through its Indigent Interment Program.

Greg Hess, the chief medical examiner, mentioned in 2024 that the county manages up to 600 sets of skeletal remains, according to the National Association of Counties. This high number is attributed to unidentified migrants who perish in the harsh Sonoran Desert conditions after crossing the border. Hess explained, “We have more unidentified remains than other places, because of just the nature of the environment. It’s really hot and dry; people die outside, and their remains are not protected from the environment. They’ll decompose and become skeletal remains relatively quickly.”

The proximity of the discovery to Guthrie’s home drew attention because high-profile missing persons cases often amplify interest in otherwise routine findings. Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her home near Tucson on February 1. Authorities believe she was taken against her will and have not confirmed if she is still alive. No arrests have been made in connection with her disappearance.

This situation is still unfolding. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
