Governor Mike Braun announced a state of disaster emergency for 63 counties in Indiana after a series of severe weather events. Between June 6 and June 18, the state experienced flooding, tornadoes, and a derecho. Affected counties include Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Marion, Tippecanoe, Jasper, and St. Joseph. This decision aims to expedite mobilization of state resources for recovery efforts.
A significant impact was seen at Andrean High School in Merrillville, where a tornado caused considerable damage. Cleanup and repairs are ongoing, as a state of emergency is declared to assist such affected areas.
“Many Hoosier communities were impacted by the severe weather that swept through our state this week. This emergency declaration ensures that every available state resource is mobilized quickly to support response efforts, help local governments address urgent needs and help Hoosiers recover,” Braun stated. The emergency, effective for 30 days, enables the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) to offer financial support via the State Disaster Relief Fund.
Lake County, among the hardest hit, saw five tornadoes on June 11. These tornadoes, ranging from EF0 to EF3, affected Cedar Lake, Schneider, St. John, Gary, Hobart, and other areas. A local emergency declaration by the Lake County Board of Commissioners has been approved, aiming to protect lives and property.
“The people and businesses affected are due relief and the Board of Commissioners stand with the victims of this natural disaster,” said Michael Repay, Board President. While the declaration opens possibilities for state and federal funds, it doesn’t guarantee them.
The Porter County Emergency Management Agency has requested IDHS assistance for damage assessments. These evaluations will determine if government aid criteria are met. Residents can report storm damage via Indiana 211. Additionally, agricultural damage should be reported to the Purdue Extension.
Tornadoes also caused power outages affecting thousands. A tragic incident occurred in Portage, where a couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a portable generator. The couple used the generator after losing power from the storm.
