Hasan Piker Criticizes Gov. Mikie Sherrill Over Immigration Policies

Marxist political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker recently criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill during a livestream. He accused the Democratic governor of supporting the Trump administration’s immigration policies by her response to anti-ICE protests at a Newark detention facility.

Piker’s comments followed Sherrill’s decision to send state police to manage the demonstrations outside Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center. Sherrill stated she would not allow these protests to prompt increased federal immigration operations.

“I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext,” Sherrill said while addressing the situation.

Piker mocked her explanation and expanded his criticism to encompass the broader Democratic Party.

Anti-ICE Protests in Newark

Protests outside Delaney Hall have highlighted activists’ claims of poor conditions within the facility, which the Department of Homeland Security disputes. Piker accused Sherrill of facilitating Trump’s immigration policies by deploying state troopers in riot gear.

Piker’s Ongoing Critique

Piker argued that the real issue lies in the conditions at the detention facility. He expressed disapproval of how authorities treated both protestors and journalists covering the events. His critique extended to the Democratic Party’s role in immigration enforcement.

“Democrats have absolutely participated in this process,” Piker stated. He called for systemic change through electoral action.

Piker’s activist efforts have included supporting candidates with progressive views on immigration.

Political Activism and Support

Piker has been actively campaigning for candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. His support extends to gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, whom he praised during the livestream.

He also quoted Mao Zedong, drawing attention due to his previous activism surrounding immigration issues. Earlier this year, Piker campaigned for Adam Hamamy, a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America.

Governor Sherrill’s office did not respond to a request for comment on these allegations.
