Graham Platner Endures Controversies in Maine Senate Race

Graham Platner, Democratic nominee for the Maine Senate race, has been at the center of several controversies, unsettling the Democratic Party’s efforts to secure a crucial Senate seat. Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and first-time candidate, announced his candidacy in August 2025 as a populist opponent to the long-serving Republican, Sen. Susan Collins.

Despite early challenges, including inflammatory Reddit posts and a tattoo linked to Nazi symbols, Platner’s campaign gained ground after Maine Gov. Janet Mills withdrew from the primary, effectively securing his candidacy. However, new revelations about Platner’s personal life, such as sending sexually explicit texts to multiple women while married and allegations of mistreatment of former partners, have raised further questions about his viability as a candidate.

Platner attributed his past actions to struggles with mental health and PTSD resulting from his military service, urging voters to focus on Collins’s voting history. He denied recent claims from an ex-girlfriend accusing him of physical intimidation, alleging she lacked credibility due to her Republican background. Some Democrats worry that continuous scandals might weary voters, and fear Republicans might release more damaging information.
