This incident draws parallels to the removal of rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran’s tour due to his calls for a Free Palestine. Gorillaz has previously been involved in anti-Israel causes, including performing at the Together for Palestine concert in 2025 and making statements supporting Palestine during the Glastonbury Festival in 2024. Albarn, during the festival, asked the audience if they were pro-Palestine and if they felt the conflict was unjust.
Following Macklemore’s removal, many progressive figures rallied in support of him while criticizing Sheeran. However, Sheeran’s representatives clarified he wasn’t involved in the decision. Macklemore continues to promote his stance and defended his activism through social media, stating his removal from the tour and emphasizing his message.
In an Instagram post, Macklemore reflected on his position, declaring himself not a victim and recognizing the privileges he and other artists like Sheeran and Pink have.
Ed Sheeran later addressed the situation in a concert, explaining his general avoidance of political commentary in an attempt to foster unity through his music. However, Sheeran admitted the humanitarian issue requires acknowledgment. He expressed the atrocity witnessed at a music festival and emphasized the devastating situation in Gaza. His comments highlighted the severity and the unjust suffering experienced in the region.
