Giants Retire Jeff Kent’s Jersey, Highlighting Bonds and Kent’s Complex Relationship

The San Francisco Giants celebrated Jeff Kent by retiring his No. 21 jersey at Oracle Park. During the ceremony, a key moment with Barry Bonds stood out. Though they achieved much success together in San Francisco, they are famously remembered for a 2002 dugout altercation in San Diego where Bonds pushed Kent before teammates intervened.

During the jersey retirement ceremony, they humorously reenacted the incident. While addressing the crowd, Kent reflected on their relationship, saying, “We never dined out together, but I’d go to war with him any day. Without our disagreements, we wouldn’t have achieved what we did.”

Kent also expressed his support for Bonds’ Hall of Fame chances, stating, “Barry, keep going, brother, you got a shot.” He praised Bonds, the all-time home run leader with 762 and a 14-time All-Star, acknowledging his remarkable talent but noting Bonds’ issues with performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds, despite his achievements, has not been inducted into the Hall of Fame due to these associations. In 2024, while addressing this, Bonds said, “I’ve moved past those hopes and focus on family now.”

Bonds, like Kent, had his No. 25 jersey retired by the Giants in 2018, highlighting his impact on the team despite controversies.
