In Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial runoff, a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump is trailing just days before voters head to the polls. Recent surveys indicate the race has become highly competitive, with significant implications for Trump’s influence on Republican voters.
Current Poll Findings
According to an InsiderAdvantage poll conducted June 13 to 14 among 800 likely voters, businessman Rick Jackson leads Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones by 3 points, with a 49 percent to 46 percent advantage. The poll shows 5 percent of voters remain undecided, with a margin of error of 3.31 percentage points.
Another survey is expected ahead of the runoff, factoring in a recent endorsement of Jones by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Though Kemp cannot pursue another term, his popularity in Georgia could significantly impact the tight race.
Runoff Dynamics
The runoff occurred after neither candidate achieved a majority in last month’s primary. Jones initially led with around 38 percent of the vote, while Jackson secured roughly 33 percent. However, the recent poll indicates momentum shifting toward Jackson, who has overturned Jones’ earlier lead.
Jackson’s growing support coincides with an extensive self-funded campaign. Reports highlight Jackson spending approximately $100 million, elevating the election to one of the most expensive gubernatorial primaries.
Influences and Implications
The race happens amidst broader Republican dynamics within Georgia. Governor Kemp’s endorsement of Senate candidate Derek Dooley opposes Trump’s endorsement of Mike Collins, emphasizing a contest within GOP power structures.
Until recently, Trump’s endorsement record appeared robust. According to the New York Post, Trump-supported candidates won all 118 Republican gubernatorial, House, and Senate primaries up through May. Yet, Trump’s backing faced a setback with the defeat of Randy Feenstra in Iowa, illustrating that while presidential support is influential, it may not always be decisive.
Future Outlook
The Georgia GOP runoff will occur on Tuesday, determining who will compete against Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms in November’s general election.
