Recent findings from a Fox News poll indicate that gas prices are a significant issue for many American voters. As national average prices for regular gasoline climb over $4.40 per gallon, anxiety about affordability grows. The American Automobile Association (AAA) reported that the average cost on Thursday is $4.4386. Just a day prior, it was $4.3672, and last week it stood at $4.2770. A month ago, the price was $4.0636.
Impact on Voter Concerns
The sharp increase in fuel costs coinciding with the poll results highlights the economic worries burdening Americans as the midterm elections approach. Former President Donald Trump has spoken on the issue, suggesting that the conflict with Iran would conclude following the midterms. Despite rising gas prices and inflation concerns, Trump has downplayed their importance.
It’s a very inexpensive price to pay for what we’ve done. Even if it was a lot more, prices will drop significantly,Trump stated in North Carolina.
Financial challenges are notably affecting voters, with 61 percent of those surveyed by Fox News citing fuel costs as a major issue. This figure is up from 48 percent two years ago. Trump faces criticism from farmers due to diesel prices, which inflated to $6.31 per gallon as reported by AAA. In parts of California, gas prices are nearing or exceeding $10 per gallon, causing logistical pricing challenges at stations.
Poll Insights on Economy and Administration
The poll further reveals that 63 percent of registered voters feel the economy has worsened under the Trump administration. Among independents, 73 percent hold this view, as do 95 percent of Democrats, and 26 percent of Republicans. The data shows a belief among 55 percent that Democrats would manage inflation and prices better, compared to 40 percent who favor Republicans. The top concerns listed include the cost of living and inflation (34 percent) and the economy and jobs (14 percent).
Trump’s approval ratings show a 39 percent overall approval against a 61 percent disapproval. On inflation, his approval drops to 24 percent, accompanied by a 74 percent disapproval. Grocery prices are a major concern for 62 percent of voters, healthcare for 52 percent, and housing for 54 percent. The poll, conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research from September 11-14, 2026, surveyed 1,211 registered voters with a margin of error of 3 percent.
Craig Agranoff, a political professor at Florida Atlantic University, shared insights with Newsweek, warning of political ramifications for Republicans. Gas prices over $4.40, combined with economic concerns, could be decisive in upcoming midterms. Agranoff emphasized the necessity of addressing economic hardships rather than discounting them as minor issues. Voter experiences with fuel and groceries are vital factors this election cycle.
The Midterms and Trump’s Position
The midterm elections present a typical challenge for the incumbent party, with history showing a trend of losing seats. Republicans maintain a slim majority in both chambers. Trump plans to campaign vigorously before the elections, targeting 35 key seats. Meanwhile, financial concerns dominate the campaign narrative for both Democrats and Republicans as gas prices continue to rise.
In addressing fiscal matters earlier this week, Trump used Truth Social to attribute price spikes to President Biden, asserting that Biden’s policies, not his, drove costs up. He added that resolution of the Iran conflict would lead to a steep drop in oil prices.
According to AAA, the highest average price for regular gas was recorded on June 14, 2022, at $5.0165, while President Joe Biden was in office.
