G7 Summit Focuses on Ukraine Amid New Iran Deal

G7 Leaders Gather to Address Russia’s War in Ukraine

Leaders from Italy, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Canada assembled for the opening session of the G7 summit, focused on Russia’s war in Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was seen engaging in lively discussions with these leaders while awaiting the arrival of other key figures, including Donald Trump, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and France’s Emmanuel Macron.

Donald Trump expressed optimism about progress in ending the Ukraine conflict. He noted that with recent developments concerning Iran, the focus could shift back to Ukraine. Before the Middle Eastern conflict took precedence, the U.S. had been actively involved in negotiating an end to the Ukraine war, which has persisted for four years. Zelenskyy urges Western allies to renew their efforts and apply more pressure on Russia.

Impact of Iran Agreement on Energy Prices

Energy prices experienced a significant drop after the U.S. and Iran agreed to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. crude oil prices fell by 4.8%, closing at $80.75 per barrel, while Brent crude prices declined by 4.7%, closing at $83.17 per barrel. Both benchmarks reached their lowest levels since early March, shortly after the onset of the Iran conflict.

Nuclear Inspections to Resume in Iran

Vice President JD Vance confirmed the return of nuclear inspectors to Iran as part of the agreement with the U.S. to conclude the prolonged war in the Middle East. The core elements of the agreement involve support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the U.S. to help Iran dismantle its highly enriched stockpile. The memorandum of understanding will be publicly released following a formal signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.

Trump Faces Disagreement Over Conflicts at G7 Summit

Trump encounters allies at the summit who oppose his decisions regarding the Iran war and want further action to stop the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Group of Seven meeting in Evian-les-Bains will feature discussions on both pivotal issues, testing alliances and diplomatic strategies.
