Wisconsin Democratic socialist gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong responded to queries on Monday related to progressive U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York. Ocasio-Cortez did not endorse Hong in the primary held on Tuesday. When asked why Ocasio-Cortez, often called AOC, and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders from Vermont did not support her, Hong expressed her respect for them.
Hong said, “I have so much respect for the senator and the congresswoman, and they are working tirelessly to make sure that we can flip Congress and the Senate and get Democrats wins in the midterms. I look forward to conversations with them about that too.” When further asked if their lack of endorsement suggests doubts about her chances in Wisconsin, Hong remarked that gubernatorial races are different from federal elections.
Confident Supporters Ahead of Primary
Hong’s campaign received significant attention. Supporters expressed confidence in her ability to address affordability issues. During a Milwaukee rally on August 2, 2026, Hong was seen enthusiastically engaging with the crowd.
Focus on Federal Elections
In an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Jonathan Karl questioned Ocasio-Cortez about endorsing Hong. The congresswoman replied, “No, I haven’t endorsed in that race. My focus has been in winning back the Congress, winning back the House and positioning ourselves to have the best chance possible to win the Senate.”
When Karl brought up controversial remarks made by Hong, Ocasio-Cortez mentioned that Hong has clarified her current positions to her electorate, noting the importance of evaluating current candidate statements.
Addressing Key Issues for Voters
Responding to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments, Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, highlighted issues affecting the working class. She emphasized the need to address economic inequities, including taxing the ultrarich, imposing a data center moratorium, raising wages, advocating for universal childcare, and ensuring public school funding.
Other Candidates in the Race
The primary also featured Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, state Sen. Kelda Roys, and former Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Administration Joel Brennan. These candidates competed for the Democratic nomination in the gubernatorial contest.
