France Prepares for World Cup Showdown Against Iraq

France brings a wealth of talent to the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Kylian Mbappe, the Golden Boot winner at the 2022 World Cup, claimed his second straight Pichichi Trophy with Real Madrid. Ousmane Dembélé holds the title of Ballon d’Or winner, and Michael Olise shines as a world-class winger.

Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold, understands the challenge his team faces against France at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Monday, June 22. During a press conference, Arnold humorously remarked, “I asked if we could play three goalkeepers, but they said no.” He acknowledged the exceptional talents within the French team, stating, “It’s an honor.”

Arnold emphasized his team’s focus on their own performance. “We will go out, and we will play — we’re focused on ourselves,” he said. “We can’t control France’s performance, but we can control our own. Ensuring the players are ready to showcase their skills is the most important thing.”

France, known as Les Bleus, demonstrated their strength in their opening match with a 3-1 victory over Senegal. Mbappe scored twice, continuing his pursuit of another Golden Boot. Iraq, making their first World Cup appearance in 40 years, started with a 4-1 loss to Norway. Manchester City star Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway, exposing weaknesses in Iraq’s defense.

France and Norway lead Group I with three points each. Iraq and Senegal will aim for better results in their upcoming matches.
