Former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has announced the release of a memoir titled Promise Me, America, set to hit the shelves on November 17. The book will explore his presidency, focusing on how he navigated significant issues like the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, and conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Additionally, it will touch on efforts to restore democracy following the January 6 Capitol attack.
In a social media video, Mr. Biden shared that the memoir would delve into what he described as his most consequential decision as president: the choice to run for re-election and then to step aside. He emphasized his ongoing faith in America’s promise throughout these defining moments.
Since his departure from office nearly 18 months ago, Mr. Biden, now 83, has largely stayed out of the public eye. Meanwhile, his wife, Jill Biden, recently published her own memoir. His son, Hunter Biden, has actively defended the family’s legacy via social media and podcasts.
Mr. Biden revealed the book’s existence accidentally during an event on his wife’s book tour last month. He mentioned its September release, which concerned some Democrats focused on regaining control of Congress during the upcoming midterms. This reaction came after Biden’s decision to run for re-election met with disappointment; many Democrats preferred a younger candidate due to his declining poll numbers following a poor debate performance.
The memoir’s title, Promise Me, America, alludes to Mr. Biden’s 2017 book Promise Me, Dad, which recounted his bond with his son Beau, who succumbed to brain cancer while Biden served as vice president.
In the announcement, Mr. Biden appeared in his home office, mentioning time spent with family and managing his own health challenge, a cancer diagnosis that he has been treating.
