In a recent incident, a 67-year-old man in Florida faced serious legal trouble after a relationship involving a “sugar baby” went awry. The situation escalated to allegations of aggravated assault.
David Allen O’Brien, a resident of The Villages, a large retirement community in central Florida, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault. According to an arrest report, O’Brien allegedly chased down a 21-year-old woman, whom he met through a “sugar baby” arrangement, and rammed her car with his truck.
The arrest report detailed how O’Brien met the woman on Tinder, a popular dating app. He expressed his intention of finding a sugar baby, a type of romantic arrangement where an older individual lavishes gifts on a younger person.
The two arranged a meeting on July 21. O’Brien reportedly offered the woman $1,000 per encounter, including dinner and shopping trips. Upon meeting, he initially gave her $200 and took her shopping for lingerie. They had dinner, during which he provided her with an additional $600. Things began to shift when they returned to his home.
Feeling uncomfortable, the woman contacted her friends to pick her up following the visit. O’Brien, noticing her discomfort, suggested she should return the money given the unmet expectations, according to the report.
The woman left with her friends, which led to O’Brien allegedly pursuing them in his Ford F-150 truck. The chase ended when O’Brien purportedly collided with the woman’s car, causing a crash into a telephone pole. During this confrontation, O’Brien allegedly threatened a 22-year-old male, one of the woman’s friends, with a gun.
The incident intensified as O’Brien pointed a semi-automatic Ruger firearm at the man and demanded he lay on the ground. Seizing a moment of distraction, the man managed to evade further harm.
Police arrived to find O’Brien in possession of his firearm at the site of the crash. He told the officers the car he was pursuing had blacked-out tail lights, which he interpreted as a sign of being “scammed.” O’Brien was subsequently charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill, along with aggravated battery.
O’Brien was transferred to Sumter County Jail without incident, and his arraignment is scheduled for August 14. Further information may emerge as authorities continue to investigate the matter.
