Firehouse Subs Co-Founder Chris Sorensen Dies at 65

Chris Sorensen, known for founding the sandwich chain Firehouse Subs, passed away at the age of 65. Sorensen’s journey is remarkable, transitioning from music to firefighting before entering the restaurant industry.

Sorensen began his career as a professional guitarist. He played with bands such as Huey Lewis and the News, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Later, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a firefighter.

He served at the Brevard County Fire Department and Jacksonville International Airport Fire and Rescue Department. For about a decade, Sorensen worked as an engineer and EMT at Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, alongside his father, Robert.

In 1994, Chris Sorensen and his brother Robin founded Firehouse Subs, opening the first restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida. With less than $100 in their checking accounts, they started what would become a popular sandwich chain. Surprisingly, the first order at the flagship location was for two hot dogs loaded with about ten ingredients, which was unexpected for the team focused on subs.

Recognized for its quality, Firehouse Subs features steamed meats and cheeses on toasted rolls. Sorensen was instrumental in designing the interior of the restaurants, each location adorned with a mural reflecting local fire and police services.

Sorensen collected historical artifacts and served as the chain’s unofficial historian. In 2021, Firehouse Subs was sold to Restaurant Brands International for one billion dollars. With over 1,200 locations, the chain continues to thrive.

In 2005, Chris and Robin Sorensen established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The foundation provides life-saving equipment, tools, and education to first responders. With over $118 million in grants distributed to more than 7,700 departments in the U.S. and Canada, the foundation has made a significant impact.

Chris Sorensen’s contributions to the restaurant industry and public safety will be remembered and missed by many.
