FIFA World Cup Controversy Involving Folarin Balogun

The United States men’s national soccer team faced a tough defeat, losing 4-1 to Belgium in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Striker Folarin Balogun, unexpectedly playing in this match, became the center of a significant controversy.

Initially, Balogun did not anticipate participating in the game. On July 1, he received a controversial red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemovic following a VAR review. This red card led to an automatic one-game suspension. However, FIFA later overturned the suspension, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium. This decision sparked widespread criticism and discussions about corruption and ethics in the sport, with Balogun’s name frequently mentioned despite not being involved in the decision-making process.

Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia, reacted to FIFA’s ruling with surprise, humorously comparing it to an April Fools’ joke. Despite the controversy, Garcia commended Balogun after the match. He noted that Balogun approached him during a difficult time, stating, “I liked that. It’s not his fault. He’s not the one to blame. I told him that. I appreciate he came to talk to me, and he’s a player I really like.” Garcia praised Balogun’s skills as a striker but was confident that his center-back duo, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy, could contain him, which they successfully did.

BaloGun was not a significant factor in the match. Belgium dominated the game, which the scoreline reflected, with the U.S. managing only two shots on goal. The only goal for the U.S. came from Malik Tillman’s free kick in the 31st minute.

In his debut World Cup, Balogun emerged as the USMNT’s leading scorer with three goals. The U.S. team has a pattern of exiting the tournament in the Round of 16, as seen in their last four World Cup appearances. They have not advanced to the quarterfinals since 2002. Notably, Belgium also defeated the U.S. in the Round of 16 during the 2014 World Cup.

After this victory, Belgium will face Spain in the quarterfinal at SoFi Stadium on Friday, July 10.
