Federal Judge Blocks USPS from Enforcing Trump’s Mail-in Ballot Order

A federal judge has blocked the United States Postal Service (USPS) from enforcing an executive order related to mail-in ballots. The order, issued by President Donald Trump, required states to provide a list of mail-in voters to the postal service before ballots could be transmitted. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan’s ruling prevents the order from being implemented nationwide.

Legal Challenge and Ruling

Judge Sullivan argued that enforcing the order would breach a previous settlement agreement from a 2020 lawsuit between the USPS and the NAACP. The agreement mandated court oversight to ensure the postal service monitored and delivered election mail promptly. Sullivan noted that the order contravened this by potentially refusing mail-in ballots from non-compliant states.

“The Proposed Rule violates paragraph 2 of the Agreement because the Postal Service cannot post documents reflecting ‘practices and policies for prioritizing the monitoring and timely delivery of Election Mail’ if its policies provide that it will not accept ‘noncompliant mailing’ and therefore will not deliver mail-in or absentee ballots to some voters, and if it will not mail ballots to any voters in a state where the state ‘declines or fails to certify a list,’” Sullivan wrote.

Earlier this year, nearly 25 states had successfully blocked the order within their jurisdictions. Sullivan’s recent decision now extends this block on a nationwide level.

Context of Recent Legal Developments

This ruling follows a separate case where an Obama-appointed judge halted Trump’s attempts to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections. The dispute revolved around Executive Order 14248, aimed at combating voter fraud by establishing a federal voter registration list and limiting mail voting eligibility.

Responding to these challenges, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson expressed confidence in the administration’s electoral measures. “President Trump is committed to ensuring that Americans have full confidence in the administration of our elections. The President’s executive order lawfully protects our elections, and we are confident that we will ultimately prevail in its implementation,” she conveyed to Fox News Digital.
