Hope can be complicated. It motivates action but seems hard to find when faced with news of cruelty and corruption. Recently, I experienced a surge of hope during a weekend with young public servants at a national gathering of the Young Elected Officials Network, organized by People For the American Way Foundation. This event supports elected leaders under 40 committed to fostering communities that prioritize freedom, fairness, and opportunity.
The gathering, themed “Power in Practice: Governing for a Just Democracy,” was a diverse and significant assembly. Seeing experienced members mentor newcomers and share insights was inspiring. Notable speakers included former Vice President Kamala Harris, who advised against letting caution prevent necessary change. She urged young leaders to remain connected to their communities.
“Do not let caution stand in your way,” Harris emphasized.
Democracy advocate Stacey Abrams highlighted the power of storytelling to drive positive policy outcomes. She advocated viewing compromise as a key component of governance.
Bill Nye the Science Guy reminded attendees of the Constitution’s emphasis on science and called for continued investment in scientific endeavors. Actor and activist Alyssa Milano, discussing women’s rights post-“Me Too,” spoke about the long-term rewards of courageous actions.
Rep. Lateefah Simon, a MacArthur Fellowship recipient, emphasized learning from past successes and failures. She highlighted her achievements as a freshman legislator in Congress, underscoring the importance of legislative action over mere rhetoric.
These speakers underscored that true progress requires tangible achievements that improve lives. The media may debate political shifts, but the true test lies in actual accomplishments.
There is a growing number of young, idealistic individuals entering public office at local levels. The Young Elected Officials Network helps them govern effectively, maintaining voter trust and counteracting the cynicism that disengages citizens.
If you feel disheartened, I encourage you to support young leaders strengthening our communities. Their commitment will inspire hope.
