Ed Sheeran Faces Criticism After Removing Macklemore from Tour

Ed Sheeran removed rapper Macklemore from his tour following Macklemore’s on-stage remarks supporting Palestine. This decision stirred controversy, leading to criticism from various fronts.

Jack Antonoff’s Criticism

Jack Antonoff, known for his work with Taylor Swift, criticized Sheeran for his decision. In an interview with The Guardian, Antonoff suggested Sheeran missed a chance to oppose big corporate interests. He argued that instead of caving to pressure, Sheeran could have canceled the tour and held free concerts outside venues.

“If you think it is controversial, you’re lost,” Antonoff remarked.

Pressure from NFL Owners

Reports indicated that NFL team owners, including Robert Kraft, pressured Sheeran to exclude Macklemore. They reportedly threatened to block stadium performances if Macklemore was part of the lineup.

Kathy Griffin also voiced her opinion, suggesting Sheeran should have confronted Kraft over the demands.

Sheeran and the Controversy

During a stop in Philadelphia, Sheeran addressed the issue. He commented on the ongoing conflict, expressing concerns about the situation in Gaza.

Other artists scheduled to appear with Sheeran, like Finneas and Lukas Graham, withdrew in support of Macklemore. Macklemore has continued advocating for his cause with a “Free Palestine Tour.”

Industry Reactions

Antonoff, who supports a “free Palestine,” praised Macklemore’s stance. Despite the controversy, he believes it’s a human right to express such views.

Christian Toto, a film critic, took a different stance. He argued Antonoff’s comments were more about industry approval than free speech. Toto questioned the feasibility of an alternate tour and its impact on workers reliant on tour income.

Sheeran and Macklemore’s teams were contacted for comments but did not respond immediately.
