A recent national survey reveals that Gen Z’s declining sexual activity, often referred to as a ‘sex recession,’ may not stem from disinterest, but from economic challenges. The 2026 Gen Z Sex Survey, conducted by Playboy alongside the Kinsey Institute and sexual health brand Julie, indicates that financial concerns significantly hinder young adults’ dating and romantic pursuits.
Survey Findings
The survey, which involved 2,373 adults, highlights critical barriers related to finances:
- 43% of respondents reported that financial issues make dating or maintaining relationships difficult.
- 39% cited the cost of dating as a limit on their opportunities for romance and sex.
Sandra Hatton, founder and CEO of When We First, explained that financial constraints extend beyond the cost of a meal: living conditions, student debt, and basic expenses contribute to the problem, impacting finances, privacy, and mental energy required for dating.
Declining Sexual Activity
Despite high levels of sexual desire reported by nearly 80% of respondents, sexual activity remains low. Many participants face significant financial and logistical obstacles:
- 29% did not have sex in the past three months.
- One in five reported having never had sex.
- 32% felt their sex lives were fulfilling and consistent.
Matthew Firth, founder of NexSpark, noted that dating apps require time and financial resources that many Gen Z individuals lack, often leading them to opt out rather than face low success odds and high costs.
Intimacy and Living Arrangements
While intimacy persists, financial strains remain apparent:
- Nearly half of those surveyed reported frequent kissing, with the number rising to 72% among those in relationships.
- 54% live with family, and among these, 64% had not engaged in sexual activity recently.
This suggests that living conditions and lack of privacy may affect intimate behavior, as highlighted by Brie Temple, COO and chief matchmaker at Tawkify.
Looking Forward
The survey suggests that alleviating financial pressures and improving housing affordability could help remove some barriers to romance and intimacy for Gen Z. However, digital habits, dating fatigue, and changing attitudes towards relationships may still influence their romantic lives, regardless of economic conditions.
Advice for Gen Z
Dating coaches recommend practical dating ideas that align with the current economic climate. Rae Weiss, a Gen Z dating coach, advises planning affordable dates that mirror everyday life, such as coffee outings, gaming, or trivia nights with friends. Weiss emphasizes adjusting first date expectations to match Gen Z’s economic realities, as traditional dating investments are becoming less feasible.
