Early Emmy Wins for ‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Pitt’

The debut season of Widow’s Bay achieved significant success, winning eight early Emmy Awards at a pre-ceremony event ahead of the main awards show. The Pitt also performed well in its second year, garnering four awards, while Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy for acting. DTF St. Louis excelled in limited series categories, securing six awards and marking first-time wins for David Harbour and Linda Cardellini.

Widow’s Bay, an Apple TV horror comedy starring Matthew Rhys as a mayor contending with an ancient curse, earned accolades in cinematography, sound, music, and production design. Betty Gilpin won for best guest actress in a comedy with her role on the show, delivering a humorous poem during her acceptance speech.

The Pitt’s Strong Performance

Ernest Harden Jr. was celebrated for his role as a guest actor in HBO Max’s The Pitt, a medical series that led nominations with 25 and previously won best drama for its debut season. Harden’s emotional win was for portraying Louie Cloverfield, a recurring character embodying the struggles of alcoholism. He expressed profound gratitude and surprise backstage.

In addition to Harden’s win, Andrew Bird and Gavin Brivik received recognition for their musical contributions to the show. Bird noted the importance of creating memorable moments for beloved characters.

Creative Arts Emmys Rebranding

The Creative Arts Emmys, now part of the first two nights of the 78th Emmy Awards, presented over 100 awards largely to behind-the-scenes professionals, including notable guest-acting awards. These included wins by David Harbour and Linda Cardellini for their roles in DTF St. Louis.

Cardellini, known for her work in Freaks and Geeks and Mad Men, expressed deep gratitude in her acceptance speech.

Tribute to Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner was honored posthumously with an Emmy for his role in The Bear, prompting a heartfelt ovation. Reiner was tragically killed in December, and his win honors his legacy, reminiscent of his earlier Emmy successes.

The upcoming ceremonies will be broadcast on FXX and Hulu before concluding with the primetime event hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

Widow’s Bay and The Pitt remain contenders for additional awards on the final night. Pluribus, another promising newcomer from Vince Gilligan, also garnered recognition with four wins for editing, production design, and sound.
