Dolphins Avert Winless Season with Victory Over Jets

The Miami Dolphins remain the only NFL team to have completed a 17-0 season. Concerns arose about the 2026 season potentially ending 0-17 under coach Jeff Hafley’s rebuilding efforts. However, the team secured its first win against the New York Jets, defeating them 28-25 at MetLife Stadium, thus averting a winless start.

Heading into the game, the Dolphins faced a potential 0-6 streak for the first time since 2019. Quarterback Malik Willis played a pivotal role, throwing for two touchdowns and adding a rushing score. The Dolphins demonstrated renewed energy following their bye week.

Miami’s offensive momentum began with Willis connecting with rookie Caleb Douglas for a seven-yard touchdown. Ollie Gordon, stepping up due to De’Von Achane’s injury, followed with a touchdown after a 14-play drive, putting the Dolphins ahead 14-7.

Geno Smith led the Jets with a promising opening drive, including a 52-yard pass to Omar Cooper Jr., eventually leveling the score with Mason Taylor’s impressive touchdown catch. However, Miami took a 21-7 lead into halftime, with Willis scoring on a two-yard rush just before the break.

The Jets closed in late in the game, with Smith finding Taylor again for a 12-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, reducing the gap to 28-25. Willis then secured the win for Miami by converting a crucial fourth-and-1.

While the Dolphins need a significant winning streak to enter the playoff contention, their victory has eased pressure. Meanwhile, Aaron Glenn’s Jets, now 2-5, face uncertainty despite Smith’s notable performance, throwing for 287 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
