The Department of Justice is currently investigating allegations of voter fraud in Wayne County, Michigan. Harmeet Dhillon, the U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, has highlighted cases of fraudulent voting and non-compliance with the Help America Vote Act.
Meanwhile, a ballot error during the Maryland primary has reignited Republican demands for a federal review of the state’s voter rolls. Approximately 400,000 voters who requested mail-in ballots mistakenly received ballots for the wrong party due to a vendor error.
Maryland Voter Roll Audit Demands
The conservative Freedom Caucus in Maryland is urging state officials to release voter rolls for federal verification. They argue an audit is needed following an error that required the state to resend thousands of ballots.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus is calling on Secretary of the Election Board, Jared DeMarinis, to immediately release Maryland’s voter rolls to the federal government so a proper audit can be conducted to determine the sources of the mistake.
The caucus warned against issuing another 400,000 ballots without clear differentiation between initial and subsequent mailings. They stressed the need for clarity on scrutinizing the ballots to ensure one-person-one-vote integrity.
Concerns Over Voter Confidence
The group criticized Maryland Democrats and the State Board of Elections for promoting voter suppression. They noted around 400,000 incorrect ballots were initially sent, and the state plans to send corrected versions. The risk exists for erroneous votes from those using incorrect ballots.
Election Officials Respond
Jared DeMarinis, Maryland’s State Administrator of Elections, reassured the public of efforts to maintain voting process integrity. With over 500,000 mail-in ballot requests, he stressed the importance of accurate vote casting and transparency.
Mail-in voting is an integral facet of the electoral process. We are actively answering phones and responding to emails and will remain transparent as we navigate through this situation.
Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), the responsible vendor, admitted the mistake and promised corrective actions, including reissuing correct ballots by May 29, 2026. The vendor advised voters to destroy the incorrect materials and use only the new ones.
Republican Scrutiny on Voter Rolls
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has intensified its scrutiny of Maryland’s election processes, already having sued the state for improper voter roll maintenance. According to the RNC, some counties reported implausible registration rates, surpassing the actual number of adult citizens.
RNC Chair Joe Gruters emphasized the need for accurate voting rolls, arguing that federal law mandates states to maintain up-to-date voter records and allow public inspection.
