DOJ Argues Shooting Highlights Need for White House Ballroom

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a new argument in court, citing a recent shooting near the White House as grounds to dismiss a legal challenge against President Donald Trump’s ballroom project. This filing represents a step by the Trump administration to counter efforts aimed at halting or altering the plan to replace the East Wing.

Critics maintain the project necessitates more scrutiny. However, Trump and his senior aides emphasize that the construction of the ballroom holds national security importance, especially considering security concerns stemming from past incidents such as a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Officials believe that this ballroom could prevent future threats.

The DOJ argued that the shooting incident close to the White House demonstrates an attempt on the President’s life. This underscores the urgent need for state-of-the-art security measures, including the new ballroom, which is a critical component of the East Wing Project.

Journalists at the White House reported hearing multiple gunshots and were directed to take cover. The shooting occurred near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, adjacent to the presidential complex.

The suspect approached a checkpoint and fired at officers, according to the Secret Service. Agents returned fire, injuring 21-year-old Nasire Best from Maryland, who later died in the hospital. Authorities are investigating whether any bystanders were hit by gunfire.

Best had previously encountered law enforcement near the White House on June 26, 2025, making threats as reported by NBC News. He was later arrested in July, charged with trying to enter a checkpoint without authorization and resisting officers’ commands while claiming he was Jesus Christ.

White House Ballroom for ‘Safety and Security’

In the latest DOJ filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, officials emphasized the $400 million ballroom’s role in protecting the president, their families, staff, foreign dignitaries, and guests. The document detailed the advantages of this permanent structure over temporary event tents in terms of security.

Key security features of Trump’s ballroom include high-level bullet resistance and various defenses to protect inhabitants. The facility is designed to include:

  • Bomb shelters
  • Advanced medical facilities
  • Military structures and equipment
  • Missile-resistant columns
  • Blast-proof glass
  • Government-sniped facilities

The DOJ highlighted the need for hermetic sealing to prevent air contamination by hostile forces and criticized the lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for exposing sensitive aspects of the design.

Two Attempted Shootings in One Month

The DOJ argued the recent attempts on the President’s safety intensify the necessity for advancing the ballroom’s construction. Besides the incident on Saturday, another armed individual reached a room hosting Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Though no shots were fired, suspect Cole Allen has been charged with attempted assassination and multiple firearm offenses. The DOJ stated the occurrence further validates the vital role of this project in national security.

The DOJ acknowledged the ballroom as an invaluable contribution by President Trump and various donors supporting the nation’s security and future presidents.

Newsweek contacted the National Trust for comment but received no immediate response. The organization previously refused to withdraw its complaint, demanding adherence to legal procedures.

What Happens Next

Construction is permitted to continue until June 5, although an injunction remains pending. Efforts by critics persist as they seek to ensure compliance with established laws.
