A DNA expert shared crucial testimony in Los Angeles concerning the murder case of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Prosecutors allege that D4vd, an indie-pop singer, killed and dismembered her after she threatened to expose their sexual relationship, risking his career.
Los Angeles police technicians gathered DNA samples from D4vd’s Hollywood garage, including from a rubber floor mat, a rowing machine, and a Tesla charger. Samantha Tosch, a police criminalist, declared that these samples were a strong match with Rivas Hernandez. Tosch highlighted that the probability of the DNA originating from Rivas Hernandez, rather than from anyone else, is astronomically high at one septillion times.
Prosecutors’ Evidence
The preliminary hearing aims to determine whether D4vd will face trial for murder, child sexual abuse, and body mutilation. Although D4vd has pleaded not guilty, defense lawyers vowed a strong defense. Previously, prosecutors mentioned her DNA’s presence in the garage in filings, but without public exposure.
Forensic Details
DNA testing extended to a trash bag and cleaning wipes in the garage. Tosch noted a mixture of DNA from four people on the trash bag, including two males. One was identified as D4vd. Rivas Hernandez’s DNA appeared on the wipes; however, D4vd’s did not.
Another officer testified that many garage stains were discovered using a luminescent chemical test. A court-displayed image showed bright blue stains on the rubber mat. Under questioning, Tosch affirmed that the DNA could be from touch, not necessarily blood, and conceded uncertainty about DNA origin, transfer, or duration at the location.
Defense Strategies
The defense questioned testing methods, focusing on untested items like chainsaws reportedly used in the crime. Lauren Wallace of the LAPD confirmed negative blood results on the saws, thus no further DNA testing on the handles. Defense highlighted that touch DNA from potentially other individuals could exist, undetected visually.
